Development of a Variable Buoyancy System

This paper reports on the early production and testing of a Micro Underwater Glider (MUG), which is going to be fully autonomous, small and still have same characteristics as alternative products. The intent is to vary the buoyancy of the MUG by changing the volume without changing the mass. Filling the MUG with oil (biodegradable) makes it possible for the variable buoyancy system (VBS) to be placed in any flexible casing. Making prototypes were used to troubleshoot and find optimized solutions for the VBS. Decreasing the diameter was found to be more suitable, due to optimizing capacity, weight and size.
